Every Drop Counts
Story Essence

A student-led initiative at Green Valley School transformed water conservation practices, leading to reduced waste and increased awareness about the importance of clean water.

The Story

At Green Valley School, we believe every student deserves access to clean drinking water. We noticed that many of our drinking-water stations were outdated, some taps leaked, and students were unaware of their water usage. To address this, we formed a Water Action Team of students and teachers, focusing on SDG 6 — Clean Water and Sanitation. Over a week, students inspected water stations, washrooms, and garden taps, identifying eight leaking taps and two stations needing maintenance. We estimated that leaks wasted about 200 litres of water daily. Instead of just reporting the issues, students collaborated with teachers and maintenance staff to implement solutions. Leaks were fixed, stations serviced, and signs were placed to encourage proper tap use. We also launched the “Every Drop Counts” campaign, where students created posters and gave presentations on water conservation. Younger students learned about the importance of clean water, while older students monitored usage on campus. Within two months, we observed a significant reduction in water waste, with all leaks repaired and over 150 students engaged in awareness activities. This project taught us that sustainability can stem from small actions, and protecting our water is a shared responsibility. Our next goal is to introduce rainwater harvesting for the school garden and establish a student water-monitoring group.

How to try this

Practical steps another school or community can adapt from this story.

1
Form a student-led team to address water issues in the school.
2
Conduct a week-long survey to identify leaks and areas of water waste.
3
Collaborate with teachers and maintenance staff to develop and implement solutions.
4
Launch a water conservation awareness campaign with posters and presentations.
5
Monitor water usage regularly and encourage students to report leaks and promote responsible water use.
